MuMe Museum
Edoardo Dionea Cicconi exhibits at MuMe Messina, the Regional Museum of Messina Sicily. This is the first time a contemporary artist presents their work at the museum.
The museum holds a prestigious collection. With 4700 square meters of space, the museum safeguards around 750 works of art spread out over two floors. The space is subdivided in areas, from Medieval, to Modern, and not forgetting archaeology. Included in the collection are works by Caravaggio during his time in Sicily and Antonello Da Messina.
This is possible thanks to BIAS 2020 with patronage of the Sicilian Department of Cultural Heritage, the City of Messina, the Donà dale Rose Foundation and WISH World International Sicilian Heritage.
The game of time, the time of game is the theme of the exhibition. Time is a concept that is very important to the artist Edoardo Dionea Cicconi who will present a series of new works installed in the Caravaggio room in the museum.
The “XYZT.SP“ installation is a self-supporting metal structure with a mirrored surface on the front. The surface of the mirror, straight and sharp, has a peculiarity: at times it reflects reality by distorting it. Through a hidden mechanism, the image flexes and then returns to its initial appearance. The work moves, catching the viewer – whose image becomes distorted, disappears and then reappears – by surprise.
Influenced by contemporary physics and by the texts of Carlo Rovelli, Edoardo Dionea Cicconi’s research attempts to summarise the concepts of space and time in a single entity – spacetime – in which relativity takes over the temporal dimension. Continuing his research, Cicconi’s installation attempts to establish a dialogue between the phases of time (past, present and future) and their changes.
Spectators can interact with the sculpture and, thanks to a play of reflections, also with the paintings. In fact, intermittently, the mirrors will distort the reflected reality. Viewers will “disappear” and blend in with the surrounding space and with the paintings themselves.
In this way, the barrier of time is broken down. But also, that of space, being completely engulfed by mirrors. Like a sort of black hole, where everything becomes dense inside and where, even today, no one knows where this totality will end up.

Edoardo Dionea Cicconi partecipa alla prima rassegna di arte contemporanea presso il MUME, il Museo Regionale di Messina, che ospita capolavori del passato.
Con i suoi 4700 metri quadrati, il museo custodisce circa 750 opere distribuite sui due livelli dell’edificio e suddivise in aree temporali diverse, dal Medioevo alla modernità senza dimenticare la sezione archeologica. Fra le opere che animano la raccolta una serie di opere del Caravaggio, durante il suo soggiorno in Sicilia, e Antonello da Messina.
Questo è stato possibile grazie alla BIAS 2020 col patrocinio dell’assessorato ai Beni Culturali della Regione Siciliana, Il Comune di Messina, la Fondazione Donà dalle Rose, WISH World International Sicilian Heritage.
Il tema della rassegna è The game of time, the time of game. Il tempo, un concetto molto caro all’artista Edoardo Dionea Cicconi, che presenterà una serie di nuovi lavori allestiti nella sala del Caravaggio del Museo.
L’installazione “XYZT.SP” si presenta come una struttura autoportante in metallo con una superficie specchiante sul fronte. La superficie dello specchio, dritta e nitida, presenta una particolarità: a tratti riflette la realtà distorcendola. Attraverso un meccanismo nascosto, l’immagine si flette per poi tornare al suo aspetto iniziale: è l’opera a muoversi cogliendo in fallo lo spettatore, che viene distorto fino a scomparire per poi riapparire di nuovo.
Influenzata dagli studi della fisica contemporanea e dai testi di Carlo Rovelli, la ricerca di Edoardo Dionea Cicconi tenta di compendiare i concetti di spazio e tempo in un’unica entità, lo spaziotempo, in cui la relatività si impadronisce anche della dimensione temporale. Proseguendo la sua indagine, l’installazione di Cicconi tenta di stabilire un dialogo tra le fasi del tempo (passato, presente e futuro) e le loro alterazioni.
Gli spettatori potranno interagire con la scultura e, attraverso un gioco di riflessi, anche con i dipinti. Infatti a sorpresa, ad intermittenza, gli specchi distorceranno la realtà riflessa. Gli utenti “spariranno” e si fonderanno con lo spazio circostante e con i dipinti stessi.
In questo modo, la barriera del tempo viene abbattuta. Ma anche dello spazio, essendo tutto fagocitato degli specchi. Come una sorta di buco nero, in cui tutto viene addensato al suo interno e in cui, ancora oggi, non si sa dove questa totalità vada a finire.
