“Art & Science” in the heart of Rome, a dual installation by Edoardo Dionea Cicconi
“AKR”, the monumental public installation by Edoardo Dionea Cicconi illuminated the sky of Rome from the Terrace of Pincio. This ”light sculpture” reproduced the true colors of the aurora borealis.
With the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Rome and INAF – The National Institute of Astrophysics – the installation was created on the occasion of Earth Day Italy.
Edoardo Dionea Cicconi’s projects sensitize spectators towards concepts related to science, as in the installations at the MuMe Museum in the Caravaggio room, in the archaeological hall of the Branciforte Museum or in the latest land-art projects in which “Time” and “Space” were the main concepts. Universal themes, which have a daily impact on our lives. This type of narrative is represented through works with essential forms, such as “timeless” sculptures and installations. The artist, investigating the relationship between matter and light, has codified the true colours of the aurora borealis in digital form. The installation is a sculpture of light in the sky, with these colours in motion.
“Light has always been the fundamental tool with which astronomers have scrutinized the sky to understand the secrets of the cosmos, from even before Galileo until today, thanks to the most powerful telescopes – declares Lucio Angelo Antonelli, INAF Director of Rome – But light is also a formidable means of expression in the artistic field. A common thread that links INAF to the works of Edoardo Dionea Cicconi who creates wonderful installations. After the happy experience with the Palermo Observatory, he continues this fruitful collaboration with the researchers of the Rome Observatory to raise public awareness of the importance of the starry sky “
The project was presented at the Hotel De Russie (Rocco Forte Hotels), which continues its commitment to support the international activities of the city of Rome. In the historic garden (designed by Giuseppe Valadier in the 19th century), Cicconi created “150-93”, a site-specific work in dialogue with the architecture and nature of the magnificent garden that borders the Pincio and Villa Borghese. The sculpture is a triangular prism that absorbs the sun during the day, at sunset this begins to dissolve and reaches complete transparency during the night. When illuminated, the large glass plates take their colors from the polar light/aurora borealis.
After eight years of absence from Rome, Edoardo Dionea Cicconi returns to his hometown thanks to this dual artistic intervention all focused in the Pincio area, in the heart of Rome.

“Arte & Scienza” nel cuore di Roma, una doppia installazione per Edoardo Dionea Cicconi
“AKR”, l’installazione pubblica monumentale di Edoardo Dionea Cicconi ha illuminato il cielo di Roma dalla Terrazza del Pincio. Questa “scultura di luce” riproduceva i veri colori dell’aurora boreale.
Con il patrocinio del Ministero dei Beni Culturali, del Comune di Roma e dell’INAF – Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica – l’installazione è stata realizzata in occasione dell’Earth Day Italia.
I progetti di Edoardo Dionea Cicconi sensibilizzano lo spettatore verso concetti legati alla scienza, come nelle installazioni al Museo MuMe nella sala Caravaggio, nella sala archeologica del Museo Branciforte o negli ultimi progetti di land-art in cui “Tempo” e “Spazio” erano i concetti protagonisti. Temi universali, che hanno un impatto quotidiano sulla nostra vita. Questo tipo di narrativa viene rappresentata attraverso opere con forme essenziali, come sculture e installazioni “senza tempo”. L’artista, indagando il rapporto tra materia e luce, ha codificato in forma digitale i veri colori dell’aurora boreale. L’installazione è una scultura di luce nel cielo, con questi colori in movimento.
“La luce è da sempre lo strumento fondamentale con la quale gli astronomi hanno scrutato il cielo per comprendere i segreti del cosmo, da ancor prima di Galileo fino ad oggi, grazie ai più potenti telescopi – dichiara Lucio Angelo Antonelli, Direttore INAF di Roma – Ma la luce è anche un formidabile mezzo espressivo in campo artistico. Un fil-rouge che lega INAF ai lavori di Edoardo Dionea Cicconi, che realizza installazioni meravigliose. Dopo la felice esperienza con l’Osservatorio di Palermo, continua questa proficua collaborazione con i ricercatori dell’Osservatorio di Roma per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’importanza del cielo stellato”
Il progetto è stato presentato all’Hotel De Russie (Rocco Forte Hotels), che prosegue nel suo impegno a sostegno delle attività internazionali della città di Roma.
Nello storico giardino (progettato da Giuseppe Valadier nel XIX secolo) Cicconi ha infatti realizzato “150-93”, un’opera site-specific in dialogo con l’architettura e la natura del magnifico giardino che confina proprio con il Pincio e Villa Borghese.
La scultura, un prisma triangolare di tre metri di altezza, durante la giornata assorbe la luce solare per poi diventare trasparente nel corso della notte e, all’imbrunire, emana i colori dell’aurora boreale.
Un duplice impegno quello dell’Hotel de Russie volto a sostegno delle Arti e ad accendere una luce sull’importanza della salvaguardia del nostro ecosistema nel corso della giornata mondiale della Terra.
Edoardo Dionea Cicconi torna a Roma dopo otto anni di assenza, grazie a questo duplice intervento artistico tutto focalizzato nell’area del Pincio, nel cuore di Roma.
